"We are awaiting approval from the National Fisheries Development Board for constructing markets in Pazhayakunnummel, Nadayara and Attingal," Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Excise K Babu said here today.
The minister was speaking at the foundation stone lauing function of the modern fish market at Vithura.
At a project cost of Rs 103.57 lakhs, the new market will facilitate sellers and consumers a hygienic environment with modern amenities.
The 254 sq meter market will house 22 commercial stalls, each with a slab and sink for cutting and cleaning fish and a clog-proof drain. The market will also have a chill room, a flake ice unit, and an effluent treatment plant.

Besides Vithura, construction of markets are at various phases in Balaramapuram, Kulathur, Chirayinkeezhu, Pangode, Kazhakootam, Nedumangad, and Venjaramoodu. Of these, markets at Kulathur and Chirankeezhu have been completed.
These markets are part of a statewide network of 52 modern, hygienic fish markets that KSCADC is setting up with the support from National Fisheries Development Board.
NFDB will provide nearly Rs 87.11 lakh of the total cost of the Vithura market. The government will chip in with the rest, a release added.
