Inspector General(IG), Police Control, Nepal Das said the police jeep rammed into the four pedestrians of whom three died on the spot and another person was injured.
"The driver was going to the police barrack at Dhajanagar from Radhakishorpur Police Station in the morning at about 5 AM when the accident occurred at Chhanban.
"All of them were morning walkers. Three persons including two women died on the spot and another was seriously injured," he said.
Gomati district SP T S Sundaram said two hours after the incident, a group of people had gathered outside the Police Station and pelted stones.
Police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd, he said, adding prohibitory orders under 144 CrPC was imposed at the Gomati district town to defuse tension.
Sundaram said the driver Dilip Debbarma was suspended from duty.
