TIDC member secy held accepting Rs 4.25 lakh bribe

A member secretary of Tapi Irrigation Development Corporation (TIDC) in Jalgaon district of North Maharashtra was today arested for accepting a bribe of Rs 4.25 lakh from farmers for sanctioning compensation, an official said.
The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) laid a trap and caught Suresh Hanumant Sawant (49), an Executive Engineer and member secretary of TIDC, was while accepting the bribe, the official said.
Sawant had demanded bribe from a 46-years-old lawyer, who was fighting a legal battle for compensation to 110 farmers, whose lands were acquired by the government for a project, he said.
Sawant had demanded a bribe from the lawyer for his sanction to the compensation, he added.
An advocate had approached the Jalgaon unit of ACB and an offence was registered against Sawant, official said.
"A trap was laid at TIDC office today, where he was caught red handed while accepting the bribe," he added.
