Forest department officials today began the wildlife census in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve in the district.
About 200 volunteers are involved in the exercise in the six ranges of the sprawling 958 square km reserve forest, with 300 cameras set up to watch movement of animals.
Volunteers are expected to cover about five km per day and collect data following the animal trails and pug marks, department officials said.
The winter census will also ascertain the tiger's prey base, they said.
