Security has been beefed up at key public places, especially crowded market places and shopping malls in the two states and Union Territory Chandigarh, officials said.
Check barriers have been set up at various other places including important railway stations and bus stands and police are also checking vehicles at various places including inter-state barriers to keep an eye on anti-social elements.
In Gurgaon, security has been beefed up around many shopping malls and other crowded market places, with police advising the people to carry their identity cards with them.
Anti-eve teasing squads will also keep an eye on the revellers, they said.

At other important towns like Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana in Punjab, police have been deployed in strength to keep an eye on the revellers during the New Year celebrations.
The authorities have asked the hotels in the region to keep an eye on strangers and inform the police about any suspicious movements.
Around 2,200 police personnel, including 600 women cops will be deployed around the city. Besides, 'nakas' have been laid around the city to prevent any untoward incident, police said.
They said that pub, restaurant, night club and farmhouse owners have been asked to hire bouncers and deploy additional security men to avoid any untoward incident inside their complexes.
