The carcass of a tigress was found today around 50 km from Sajnekhali inside the Sunderban Tiger Reserve (STR), forest department officials said.
The dead tigress has been identified as four-year-old Sundari, said Soumitra Dasgupta, field director of STR.
"Sundari had strayed into human habitation around five months back and was caught. A radio collar was fitted on her and she was released in the jungles of Number 7 compartment in Pirkhali. Since then the tigress had covered around 100 km in her habitat and was behaving normally," said Dasgupta.
"For the past four days, we were getting a static signal from Sundari's radio collar and sensing that something had gone wrong, a team set out from Sajnekhali today and found the carcass of the tigress. Initial report of the medical team accompanying the team suggest of some infection leading to the death of the tigress. A post mortem will be conducted soon," Dasgupta added.
