After making floor tiles locally for reconstruction of the 2013 flood ravaged Kedarnath Temple, Uttarakhand Government now aims to encourage other hilly regions to replicate the model and generate employment opportunities for the locals.
"The way a new tiles manufacturing unit was built for reconstruction of Kedarnath Temple, we want that in other areas also similar business models come up using local resources with the help of the state government's MSMI policy," Chief Secretary Rakesh Sharma said.
"When the reconstruction work of the Kedarnath temple started, the minimum market price of each floor tile including the cost of transportation from the plains to the site was Rs 108," he said.
The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), engaged in repair works of the temple and adjoining areas set up a tiles manufacturing unit in the area with most of the resources being local, he said.
The unit now produces around 1,000 to 1,500 tiles every day with each piece being priced at Rs 24.
"The state government would now meet people willing to set up such manufacturing units in the hilly areas to find out the hurdles they face in their endeavour and resolve those," Sharma said.
