A court here today granted bail to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Arabul Islam, who was arrested on May 12, two days before the panchayat polls in West Bengal, in connection with a murder case.
Paresh Karmakar, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Baruipur court in South 24 Parganas district, granted bail to Islam on a bond of Rs 20,000.
Islam's counsels prayed for his bail, claiming that he was seriously ill and was in custody for 72 days.
The counsels submitted that the TMC leader was undergoing treatment at the state-run SSKM Hospital.
Islam was arrested on charges of murder and arson on May 12, following violence at Bhangor in South 24 Parganas district.
The former Bhangor MLA was alleged to have led an attack on an opposition rally, in which a 25-year-old man was shot dead.
He was nabbed after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also the TMC supremo, ordered his arrest.
