"The state government should seek public opinion on the matter of name change. Although there is no such provision of seeking a public opinion on a particular issue, the state government should discuss the matter with all political parties and mass organisations to have an opinion on the subject," he said.
"The sentiments of the people of Bengal are associated with it. They should have their opinion before making a decision on the matter," he added.
The state cabinet had recently decided to rename the state as Bengal after its earlier proposal of 'Paschim Bango', made in 2011, was vetoed by the Centre.
