The tribunal, presided over by S Y Kulkarni, directed that Thane Municipal Transport Services should pay the compensation with the interest at the rate of 7 per cent from 2012.
Tejal Hadkar (33), a local resident, and her sister-in-law were riding a scooter to the railway station on February 6, 2012 when they were knocked down by a TMT bus.
Hadkar came under the bus' rear wheel and died on the spot whereas her sister-in-law, riding pillion, was injured.
Before the MACT, the claimants were (her son) Aarav Hadkar (2); Harshal Bapuji Hadkar (33) and Sulabha Bapuji Hadkar (61). Their lawyers, advocates Heena Shaikh and S M Pawar, argued that Tejal had very bright career prospects, and her death was a great loss for her two years old son. Also, the bus driver was solely responsible for the accident, they said.
However, the MACT held that both Tejal as well as the bus driver were responsible for the accident, and hence it deducted some amount from the compensation that was to be paid.
