A day after DMK chief M Karunanidhi said Congress would be invited to be part of an alliance led by his party for the next year's assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, TNCC President E V K S Elangovan today thanked him and said he would convey the offer to party high command.
"I thank Karunanidhi for the invite," he told reporters here responding to the DMK patriarch's statement yesterday that his party would not exclude Congress while inviting alliance parties (to join the DMK-led alliance).
Elangovan said he would take up the issue with party President Sonia Gandhi and Vice-President Rahul Gandhi. "We will act in accordance with the guidance of the party high command," he said.
The TNCC chief said, "I think time has come for secular forces to join together to oppose the BJP at the Centre and the AIADMK regime led by Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu."
Meanwhile, BJP leader and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan today told reporters in Nagercoil that the DMK's invite to Congress was like "giving support for orphans as Congress has so far been left unnoticed."
In an effort to build a formidable alliance against the ruling AIADMK for the Assembly elections due early next year, Karunanidhi has been wooing parties, including the DMDK.
However, the DMDK chief, who fought the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in alliance with BJP, has so far been cold to the overtures of the DMK claiming that a decision would be taken at an appropriate time.
