The cooperatives-run farm fresh vegetable outlets in Tamil Nadu, launched by the state government in June 2013 as part of measures to cushion people from rising inflation, have recorded a sale of Rs 21.73 crore, selling 75,74,282 kgs of vegetables in the past 18 months.
"Till March 15, 2015 the farm fresh outlets have sold 74,74,282 kilos of vegetables recording a sale of Rs 21.73 Crore since these were launched," a government statement said today.
Earlier in the day, Cooperative Minister Sellur K Raju made an inspection of a farm fresh outlet and interacted with customers.
Farm fresh veggie outlets were launched in June 2013 by the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa as part of measures to tame inflation and control prices of vegetables.
The initiative was also intended to link customers and farmers by opening "farm fresh outlets" through cooperatives in urban regions.
Chennai has 42 outlets, Coimbatore 10, Madurai four, Tuticorin and Thiruvannamalai one each. Also, Chennai has two mobile outlets.
Cooperatives procure vegetables directly from farmers and procured onions from Maharashtra.
