TN final tally 74.26 per cent, more women vote than men

Tamil Nadu recorded an overall voter turnout of 74.26 per cent in elections held for 232 assembly constituencies yesterday with more women voting than men.
Out of the total 234 constituencies, polling was held in 232 barring Aravakurichi and Thanjavur constituencies where voting has been postponed over alleged illegal activities of candidates and parties involving distribution of inducements including money and gifts.
In the 232 constituencies, the total number of voters were 5,77,33,574 and out of them 4,28,73,674 exercised their franchise which is 74.26 per cent, state Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni said in a tweet today.
Interestingly 2,16,28,807 women voted, while the number of men who cast their franchise was lower at 2,12,44,129.
A total of 3,776 candidates are in the fray in 234 constituencies with RK Nagar seat topping the list with 45 nominees including Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa in the fray. Out of the total candidates, 3,454 were men, 320 women and two transgenders.
Election Commission had taken a wide range of measures to encourage voting and achieve 100 per cent turnout.

Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency in the city where Jayalalithaa is in the fray registered 67.91 per cent polling, the highest among the 16 assembly segments in Chennai district.
More women (87,443) voted than men (85,368) besides 15 transgenders and a total of 1,72,826 electors exercised their franchise in R K Nagar, according to Election authorities here.
R K Nagar has a total electorate of 2,48,882 (1,22,409 men, 1,26,386 women and 87 third genders).
Next comes Perambur with 65.38 per cent followed by Kolathur with 64.40 per cent from where DMK Treasurer M K Stalin is seeking re-election.
While Villivakkam polled 60.92 per cent, Tiru Vi Ka Nagar recorded 63.03 per cent, Egmore 62.48 pr cent, Royapuram 62.63 per cent and Harbour 55.27 per cent, the lowest.
Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni 62.02 per cent, Thousand Lights 59.93 per cent, Anna Nagar 60.95 per cent, Virugambakkam 58.53 per cent, Saidapet which was among the worst flood hit areas 59.78 per cent, Thiagaraya Nagar 57.72 per cent, Mylapore 56.66 per cent, and Velachery 58.20 per cent.
The overall average for Chennai District is 60.99 per cent, officials said.
