TN girl attempts suicide after flunking NEET

A 17-year-old girl has allegedly attempted to commit suicide near here after she failed in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, in yet another case of students trying to take their lives reportedly upset over their poor performance in the exam.

She is out of danger following treatment at a hospital,police said today.

The girl, anguished over her poor performance in the medical entrance test, consumed poison last evening, they said.

She was rushed to a local hospital and then admitted to a hospital in Puducherry.

"Ashtalakshmi was dejected as her score in both her plus two examination and the NEET was poor.

She consumed poison and following medical treatment, she is now stable," a district police official told PTI.

The girl from Kandamangalam, about 23 km from here, is the daughter of a daily wage earner.

She had all along nurtured an ambition to be a doctor, the official said.

"She underwent coaching for sometime before she appeared for NEET," he said.

A total of three students ended their lives in Tamil Nadu reportedly over failure in the NEET since last year.

While two students-- S Prathiba from Senji in the district here and Subasri from Tiruchirappalli-- committed suicide this week, Anitha, a Dalit girl from Ariyalur, ended her life for failing to clear the exam last year.

DMK has alleged NEET discriminated against non-Hindi speaking students and put those from the economically weaker sections at a fundamental disadvantage.
