With the price of onion skyrocketing, the Tamil Nadu government has started procuring additional loads of the vegetable from Karnataka and Maharashtra for sale at lower rates through its outlets in and around the city.
Following a directive from Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, onion was being procured from Yashwantpur in Karnataka and Lazlegaon in Maharashtra and being sold through 42 Farm Fresh outlets in the city and its suburbs, the government said today.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had directed that onion be procured from other states, to control the hike in its rates and prevent people from being impacted due to the increase, an official release here said.
While onion is sold at Rs 70 per kg in the open market, it is available for Rs 55 kg in state-run outlets, it said.
