TN govt to offer broadband, internet services

Tamil Nadu would soon provide broadband and internet services to people in the state at 'nominal' rates, the government announced today.
Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly on various IT initiatives, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said Arasu Cable TV Corporation was providing cable TV connections at Rs 70 per month through local operators. Similarly, broadband services and internet services would be given by the ACTV at nominal rates.
Observing that the state government had so far given over 20 lakh free laptops to students for education, she said Cloud services and Web-hosting services would be established at Rs 50 lakh so that students can use the services at a nominal fee.
The government would construct a new building over 5,000 sq ft at Rs 40 crore, in which 40 racks would be set up to store information for Tamil Nadu State Data Centre, she said.
In order to maintain a backup of the Tamil Nadu State Data Centre, the government would construct a Near Line Disaster Recovery Centre over 1,250 sq ft at Rs five crore, she said, adding an email data base would be set up at Rs one crore to maintain old and confidential government emails.
Tamil Nadu Virtual University would create an internet-based encyclopaedia to store information on Tamils, Tamil language and literature. In the first phase of the project, a sum of Rs 20 lakh would be allocated, she said.
