A training programme to coach 100 young fishermen as professional life guards was launched here today by Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar.
An initiative of Coastal Security Group of Tamil Nadu police, the programme will make them eligible for appointment as Life Guards in beaches, hotels and resorts.
The training was inaugurated at the Arignar Anna Swimming pool, in which officials, including the Additional Director General of Police, Coastal Security Group, C Sylendra Babu participated.
A police press release said the training was yet another initiative of the CSG to provide employment opportunities for fishermen for an alternative livelihood.
While 50 fishermen are being trained here, another 50 youth would be given coaching in another location later, the release added.
After their training, the fishermen will receive the "Life Guard International Certificate' from the Life Saving Federation of India.
The professional training and certification would make them eligible for appointment as life guards in beaches, hotels and resorts.
"This effort would help the fishermen to gain employment in India and abroad, which would improve police fishermen relationship," the release said.
