Tamil Nadu leads in cadaver organ donation in India as the last year alone witnessed 136 such donations, Dr J Amalorpavanathan, state convenor, Cadaver Transplant Programme, Tamil Nadu Organ Society, said today.
There has been 534 organ donations since the programme was started in the state eight years ago, benefiting 2,500 persons, Amalorpavanathan said.
He was inaugurating Liver Transplantation Services at the private Gem Hospital here, in collaboration with Medanta Liver Transplantation Institute, near Delhi.
Coimbatore was becoming the most important place for organ donation with 27 brain dead organ donations being done last year, out of 136 in the state, he said.
Dr Arvinder Singh Soin, Chairman of the Institute, said there was a mismatch in demand and supply in liver transplantation in Tamil Nadu, which was only 360 per year as against the required 1,800 wanted cases.
The main aim of setting up GEMEDANTA Centre was to reach out to large number of people, so that the gap could be bridged and many lives saved, Soin said.
