TN official directed to probe appointments of watchmen in
Press Trust of India Madurai The Madras High Court bench here today directed Tamil Nadu Principal Secretary (Rural and Panchayat Raj) C.V.Sankar to probe allegations against State School Education Department officials that they had made several appointments to the posts of watchman and sweeper in Usilampatti Education district on recommendations of MLAs, Ministers and district secretaries of ruling AIADMK.
Justice S Nagamuthu, after the government advocate submitted that Sankar had been asked to investigate, approved the proposal and said the official can probe the allegations within four weeks and submit a report on the appointment of watchmen and sweepers in higher secondary schools.
On September 3, the judge had directed Additional Advocate General K. Chellapandian to get instructions from the state government about its stand on the issue before he could initiate any action such as ordering an inquiry by external agencies.
K. Ganesan (38), an hearing-impaired candidate who was not selected as a watchman despite the three per cent reservation for the disabled and being eligible for the post, filed a petition challenging the appointments made in Usilampatti Education district last year.
He alleged officials had adopted "illegal methods at the instance of politicians" to appoint watchmen and sweepers.
