The figure had been arrived at after the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) determined the quantum of subsidy payable by the state government to the Corporation, an official release said.
"Subsidy is payable by the Government to TANGEDCO in terms of section 65 of the Electricity Act, 2003, if the Government decides to adopt a lower tariff than what is determined by the Regulatory Commission," it said.
TNERC said majority of domestic consumers are being partially susbsidised in the range of Re 1 to Rs 1.60 per unit, whereas hut dwellers and agriculturists are fully subsidised.
"Bulk of the subsidy (nearly 49 per cent) totalling Rs 1,971.71 crore is earmarked for agricultural consumers. Rs 1767.72 crore constituting 44 per cent of the total subsidy is meant for domestic consumers. The balance seven per cent (Rs 285.53 crore) is allotted to hut consumers, handloom weavers, powerloom weavers and places of public worship," it said.
After coming under attack from political parties for the steep hike in power tariff, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa last month announced partial relief for domestic consumers.
