TN seeks two months time for setting up advisory panel

The Tamil Nadu government today sought two months time from the Madras High Court for setting up the Advisory Committee as per the Disaster Management Act.
The Secretary, Revenue department, filed a counter affidavit requesting two months time when the court was hearing a batch of petitions which found fault with the government over release of excess water from Chembarmakkam Reservoir during December last which allegedly led to the deluge in the city and suburbs.
When the matter came up earlier on September 7, the court directed the government to set up an expert Advisory committee under section 17 of the Disaster Management Act within 15 days.
The revenue secretary submitted that academic/research institutions have been requested to suggest experts for the advisory committee.Various departments have been requested to nominate suitable experts in the field of disaster management.
After receiving the nominations the government will take a decision to set up the Advisory committee as per the Disaster Management Act as early as possible, the counter said and sought two months time.
The bench posted the matter for hearing to October 20.
