TN to provide education to children of migrant workers

The Tamil Nadu government today announced a new scheme to provide primary education to children of migrant workers residing in the state.
These students would be admitted in schools close to their residence where they would also be taught their native language, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said.
Making a suo motu statement in the assembly, she said the scheme, which would benefit 6,081 children of migrant workers, would entail a cost Rs 4.30 crore to the exchequer.
The government also changed the name of 'Tamil Nadu Textbook Corporation' to 'Tamil Nadu Textbook and Education Services Corporation', making it a coordinating agency for all government initiatives in school education sector.

The Chief Minister said government would upgrade 100 high schools to higher secondary schools and 50 middle schools to high schools during 2013-14.
A total of 1,300 teaching posts would be created, she said, adding that it would cause an incurring cost of Rs 45 crore annually.
