A team of Tamil Nadu CB-CID officials probing the more than Rs five crore heist on a train, inspected the Ernakulam Railway Station as one of the cargo coaches in which the soiled RBI currency totalling Rs 340 crore had been transported was sent from here. Railway sources said the officials, who visited the station two days ago, inspected the site where the coach, from which the money was stolen, was stationed and also the CCTV footages collected from the site to ascertain whether cutting of the roof of the coach was done in Ernakulam. However, nothing "unusual" could be found out from the investigation conducted at Ernakulam station, they said. The coach was cleared for being sent to Tamil Nadu after conducting all required inspection, they said when contacted.
In a daring heist in a moving train, robbers had cut through the roof of the coach booked by the Reserve Bank of India to transport money from Salem, and escaped with about Rs 5.75 crore, with the heist coming to light after the train reached its destination Chennai on August 9. The train carrying soiled notes worth Rs 340 crore packed in 226 wooden boxes had left Salem on the previous night. Out of the 226 wooden boxes, four were found tampered with.
