With prices of maize likely to rule at Rs.1,300 to Rs.1,350 per quintal during the harvest period of March-April, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has recommended to the farmers to take their own sowing decision, considering the price range.
An econometric analysis carried out by Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell in the varsity, suggested that despite anticipated arrivals from other major maize producing States being higher, the demand for maize will keep the prices at the forecast range.
One of the important season of maize sowing in Tamil Nadu was January-February and increased global and national production in 2013, resulted in decline of prices to Rs 1,300 per quintal and exports from India were also not competitive, it said.
Considering this, the Cell analysed the price prevailing at Udumalpet regulated market for the last 19 years and arrived at the range of Rs.1,300 to Rs.1,350 per quintal.
Similarly, the cell also analysed the price behaviour of small onion and concluded that it will rule at Rs 25 to Rs.30 per kg during harvest period of April-June, as prevailing now.
Tamil Nadu accounted for five per cent of India's area under onion and more than 70 per cent of this was constituted by small onion.
During September to November 2013, the farm gate prices of small onion was Rs.45 and above, because of lesser arrivals. However, prices started declining from December due to increased arrivals and remained stable at Rs.25 to Rs.30, the cell said.
