A toddler was rescued today after he fell into a 20-foot-deep borewell in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam district, police said.

The incident occurred in Sikhedi village under the Namli police station, about 20 km from the district headquarters here, they added.

A senior police official said the groundwater level in the area, where the incident took place, was high and therefore, the borewell was not very deep.

A pit, parallel to the borewell, was dug and the one-and-a-half-year-old child rescued, he added.

Namli police station in-charge R C Kohli said the child, identified as Ganesh, was playing at a nearby field when he fell into the uncovered borewell late afternoon and was rescued at around 7 pm.

Ratlam Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Singh said, "The child was stuck at a height of 10-12 feet in the 20-foot-deep borewell and a parallel pit was dug immediately to rescue him. The groundwater level was good at the spot, so the borewell was not very deep.

"We had made arrangements to provide oxygen to the child, but it was not required. The child is conscious and has been admitted to the district hospital.
