"This is a never before initiative where a yesteryear sweet shop, so much part of Kolkata's heritage scape, collbaorates with a Bengali film produced by a big ticket Mumbai-based production, reflecting the flux between contemporary and retro in its content," director Anindyo Bikash Dutta told PTI here.
As the fillm Bonkubabu invokes all the yesteryear litterateaurs from Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay to Sarat Chandra, in a throwback to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the delicacies savoured by the cast of the film gel with the tone and tenor, and its periodicity.
"Who knew Saratchandra was in such love with Ratabi sandesh or Sajanikanto Das! We need to introduce our present generation to the sweets heritage," Director Anindyo said.
"Today's heritage Bengali sweets shops trigger the nostalgia of good old days. Since my film talks about lost Bengaliness we endeavoured to feature a real shop or if they were evolving to be in reckoning and we found no Bengalees are as much rooted and contemporary as Bonkubabu and his family," Dutta said.
"Being from the other region, we wanted to be part of sometthing which spoke about the artistic tradition of Bengal in many ways. And Bonkubabu is Bengaliness manifest in every frame," a spokesman from producers Ashtami films said.
