Holmes, 33, surprised everyone last week by filing for divorce from the top earning star in New York. Cruise, 50, had said that he was "deeply saddened" by the news at that time.
Now Cruise's lawyer has confirmed that his client will file a rival divorce without revealing where. The couple's six-year-old daughter Suri is at the centre of a bitter and expensive custody battle.
"Tactically we can't say where Tom will file a divorce case and if he'll be seeking joint custody of Suri," Fields told BBC.
"We are letting 'the other side' (Katie and her team), play the media until they wear everyone out and then we'll have something to say. It's not Tom's style to do this publicly. He is really sad about what's happening," he said.
Meanwhile, TMZ quoted sources close to Cruise as saying that Scientology was not behind their split.
According to Cruise's camp, the actress has dragged the controversial religion to hurt the actor.

"She was totally committed to Scientology. She had enthusiasm for it and would voluntarily and gladly participate in it when Tom was off shooting movies. This is not a fight over religion. It's being used as a way to hurt Tom."
The website said that Holmes decided to end her five-year marriage because she was tired of Cruise's controlling ways.
Apparently Cruise made every major and minor decision in Holmes life and career.
Movie studio-connected sources said Cruise executed an "Art Kill" way back when Holmes was doing "Thank You for Smoking" in 2005. The actor reportedly used his clout to kill photos which showed Katie and Aaron Eckhart kissing.
The actor is said to have created trouble during the shooting of "Batman Begins" by prohibiting Holmes from flying with the rest of the cast. Instead, she used his private jet, which had "disgusted" Morgan Freeman.
