The 61-year-old actor will immortalise the star of the long-running children's TV series "Mr Rogers' Neighborhood" on celluloid, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Marielle Heller is attached as director, who will helm the film from a screenplay by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.
The movie is inspired by a real-life friendship between Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod, who sees a change in his perspective on life after he begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write a profile piece on the TV icon.
Documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor?", with Rogers as the subject, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year.
