China's ruling Communist Party today expelled the chief of cash-rich Guangzhou city and sacked the rising star from his post for accepting huge bribes.
Wan Qingliang's removal from the party's membership will be confirmed in the upcoming plenary session of the Party's Central Committee, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Wan, 50, was regarded as a rising star in the Communist Party of China (CPC).
His case will be transferred to judicial departments, Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) said in a statement.
Investigations show that Wan sought profits for others by taking advantage of his post, demanding and accepting huge bribes.
He also frequented high-end private clubs, which opposes CPC's eight-point rules against extravagance and graft, the CCDI statement said.

Wan "seriously" violated Party disciplines and laws and his bribe-taking was suspected of criminal acts, it said.
Head of the Party in Guangzhou is regarded as the most prestigious and influential post. It is one of China's most highly industrialised cities after Shanghai and Beijing.
The action against Wan was part of China's crackdown on corruption launched by President Xi Jinping who also heads the Party and military.
