In a novel live fusion of classical and instrumental pieces, from European opera notes to light modern Hindi-Bengali numbers, popular Canada-based singer of Indian origin Gopa Trivedi says she hopes it will have takers.
"Raga can help in purifying soul. Music is a mind cleanser. I had practiced under classical gurus for long. Again then during my stay abroad, my stint with world music taught me there lies a similarity between divergent notes.
"Having experienced performances with a live orchestra in Canada and elsewhere, you know reaching the soul of music, from slow-soft introspective to peppy tracks, is all that important and I am blessed to be liked by people in Toronto and other places in Europe, Indian-origin to others hooked to our gharana," Gopa told PTI here.
"From Aahirvairo, rendered in the serene hours, to Ashavari and Bhairabi, all our ragas are soul-strring and have takers in west. You only need to find their resonance in western classical instrumentation pieces. All music speaks in the same dialect," the young singer, having decided to set up her base in the "city of Tagore and Shankars," said.
Leading instrumentalists from Bengali film and music fraternity from 'Calcutta Cine Musicians' Association, performed live in the orchestra as Gopa showcased her brand of east-west fusion in the first show here.
"From the discerning audiences, including Indians who are deeply nostalgic about their culture, to the crtical and appreciative audience in Kolkata now, my responsibility increases manifold now," the singer said at 'Tributes and Tarana' soiree.
