Traders stage dharna in support of demand for welfare board
Press Trust of India Puducherry : Traders and merchants staged a dharna at the Head Post office here today in response to a call given by Puducherry Traders Federation to urge government to constitute a Welfare Board to address their grievances.
Federation Secretary S Balu told reporters that the government had promised early this year that a Welfare Board would be set up. However nothing had been done since then and traders were keenly awaiting implementation of the promise.
He said the dharna was also aimed at seeking a ban on online trading which was eating into government revenue and customers were most of the time not getting quality goods.
The traders also wanted implementation of the Act fixing wages for loading and unloading of goods and enforcement of the Act with necessary amendments to ensure safe food and standardisation of the commodities consumed by the public.
