Traffic cops not to be armed: Delhi police commissioner

Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi today said that there are no plans to arm traffic police personnel with weapons.
"There is no plan to provide arms to traffic personnel," Bassi said when asked whether Saturday's incident, where Delhi traffic constable Mana Ram was mowed down by three persons in a car in West Delhi, will prompt police to arm traffic cops with weapons for their self defence.
Bassi said Mana Ram is a martyr and expressed hope that citizens of the national capital will remember his martyrdom and would refrain from breaking traffic rules.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who visited Delhi Police headquarters today, also paid homage to the slain constable. Singh had asked all the officers present to observe one minute silence in memory of Mana Ram, Bassi said.

The incident took place in west Delhi's Moti Nagar area around 7:30 pm on Saturday when 26-year-old Raman Kant, who was at the wheels of the Maruti Ritz car and accompanied by his two minor friends, was stopped at the Zakhira flyover by 24-year-old Mana Ram.
After an argument, Raman Kant reversed his car and ran over Mana Ram dragging him for around 150 metres. The constable was rushed to a Hospital area where he was declared dead. The trio had fled the scene but were later nabbed.
As many as 10 traffic policemen have lost lives in violent incidents in the national capital in the last five years.
