The Delhi government's proposal to bring the traffic wing of Delhi Police under its control is not feasible, the home ministry has told a parliamentary panel.
The Home Ministry has informed a standing committee on transport, tourism and culture that traffic police is an intrinsic part of the state police and Delhi Police Act also provided that there should be only one police force for the entire national capital.
The Delhi government had conveyed to the committee that it was unable to seek full cooperation from traffic police in managing traffic. It also said a proposal for transferring the control of the traffic police to the state government had been taken up with the Home ministry, which presently controls the Delhi traffic police.
In its reply, the home ministry told the panel there are administrative and disciplinary issues, which warrant existence of a single police force in the capital.
The committee said it was informed by the ministry that in view of these reasons, it is not "feasible" to accept the request to bring the control of Delhi Traffic Police under the government of NCT of Delhi.
