Robbers entered the Secunderabad-Visakhapatnam Duronto Express train today and stole 84 grams of diamond-studded jewellery worth Rs 12 lakh belonging to a former army officer, a Government Railway Police official said.
According to Visakhapatnam GRP inspector G Koteswara Rao, retired Lt Col Y L V Rao (68) was travelling from Secunderabad to Visakhapatnam in the first-class air-conditioned H-1 compartment.
Apart from his jewellery, Rs 1,100 in cash and his indentification card which were kept in a pouch inside his suitcase were also stolen, the GRP official said.
The passenger realised that the pouch was missing, only after the train reached Anakapalle at around 5 am today morning, the GRP official said.
After he reached Visakhapatnam today morning, he lodged a complaint with the GRP station, the GRP official said.
The GRP official said that the train did not halt throughout the journey except for the technical halt for staff change, for about a few minutes, at Vijayawada.
It is suspected that the robbery might have taken place between Vijayawada and Nidadavolu Junction, since the pouch and the identification card was noticed on the floor of the train near the gate by a passenger near Nidadavolu at around 3 am, the GRP official said, adding that probe is on.
