The system is being installed between Dum Dum and Kavi Subhash section of the Kolkata Metro and the system will be fully operational by September 30, Member (Engineering) Kulbhushan said.
TPWS eliminates the accidents caused by human error like signal passing at danger (SPAD) and overspeeding.
"Siemens has been given the job of installing the TPWS between Dum Dum and Kavi Subhash section and the installation of the system will ensure a fool-proof accident prevention mechanism in the Kolkata Metro," Kulbhushan said.
This protection device would automatically apply brakes on a train if it approaches a signal at danger too fast or fails to stop at a signal set at danger. It also automatically applies the brakes if a train is travelling too fast on the approach to certain speed restrictions and buffer stops.
