"The way the controversies surrounded the sudden transfer of the police commissioner (Rakesh Maria) in last few days, the government was left with no choice but to hand over the case to CBI," former Mumbai police commissioner P S Pasricha told PTI.
He said the case will now reach its logical conclusion.
"The case will reach its final conclusion as the CBI is better equipped to handle such cases that need coordination of various agencies such as ED and EOW," Pasricha added.
"It is a clever step by the state government to get out of the controversy which was tarnishing its image. Since the accused are powerful persons, senior police officers did not file the case in 2012. Now, Mumbai Police could get themselves out of controversy," he said.
Sheena was murdered on April 24, 2012, and her body was burnt and disposed of in the forest in Raigad district the next day.
