Transport conference to discuss transport plan for Delhi
Press Trust of India New Delhi To prepare an integrated transport plan for Delhi, the AAP government has decided to hold a one-day conference next week in which experts will suggest several measures including future of BRT projects and plan to discourage people from using their private vehicles.
Delhi Transport minister Gopal Rai said that the conference to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on July 29, will also discuss land crunch issue, traffic problems the people of the city face every day.
Rai said that Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor has been successful in Ahmadabad and other cities, but it failed in the national capital.
"We have called a conference of experts who have worked across the world to discuss integrated transport plan for Delhi. Increasing pollution is one of the biggest challenges for us to make city's transport system better controlling the pollution level here. Despite all public vehicles on CNG-run, pollution is on the rise," the Transport minister said.
Rai said that government wants to discourage people from using their personal cars and on this issue, experts will also suggest the way in this regard.
"In the second session of the conference, land crunch for bus depots, traffic problems will also be discussed. Government has floated tenders twice for buying 1380 semi-floor buses, but no manufacturers came forward to take interest.
"In view of this, we have also called manufactures in the conference to take their views as well," Rai added.
