Announcing the decision at a press conference after a cabinet meeting here today, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the ban would be from June 15 and extend to July 31, both days inclusive.

During the period, mechanised boats and shipping vessels will not be not allowed to trawl in the territorial waters of the state for protecting marine resources.

Studies have shown that overfishing in the monsoon leads to drastic depletion of fish stock, he said, adding that the monsoon season trawling ban has been an annual feature for over two decades.

According to official sources, fishing boats from other states and foreign fishing ships would be given advance warning to keep off Kerala's coast during the ban period.

Fisheries officials have been asked to coordinate with the Coast Guard and Navy for its effective implementation.

District collectors have also been instructed to take steps in advance for ensuring regular supply of free ration to fishermen and boat crew who would be rendered jobless during the period.
