The Chief Minister, known for her eco-friendly initiatives, said the canopies would require proper trimming at regular intervals.
"We are working on developing tree canopies along various roads which would provide shade to the pedestrians apart from giving an aesthetic look to the areas. It would require proper trimming at regular intervals," she said.
Dikshit was speaking after participating in a plantation drive at Golf Link area of South Delhi.
Dikshit began the drive by planting saplings at Ujwa village in West Delhi.
"The environmental imbalance may cause natural calamities similar to what happened in Uttarakhand. We should aim at making at least one third of Delhi green by planting more and more saplings," she said at the function.
The city government last month had launched a drive under which 15 lakh saplings are being planted across the city in the monsoon season with an aim to increase the green cover of Delhi.
In her address, she exhorted citizens to plant saplings in the city in the current monsoon season and take affectionate care to ensure their survival.
She said children have been contributing substantially in expanding the green cover of Delhi.
The Department of Environment has been distributing saplings free of cost at petrol pumps and premises of government offices to citizens.
