Hundreds of tribals in their traditional attire danced to the tune of the unique local music as the festival kicked off from the shrine of goddess Sankulai Devi of B Singhpur under Borigumma block yesterday.
Congress chief whip in Odisha Assembly Tara Prasad Bahinipati and Koraput MP Jhina Hikaka performed the first ritual by lighting the traditional festive torch which was taken to Bhandaragharani temple ground.
Officials said the festival-cum-competition at block and district level will go on till December 20 before the grand finale from December 21 to 23 is celebrated at the stadium ground of Koraput.
This year, the state-level Parab festival, which began in the district in 1996, would feature a number of sports events, tribal dances, songs, music with traditional instruments, archery, mini-marathon and cycling competition among others, the Collector said.

As part of the Parab celebrations this year, the administration has also decided to organise Rahgiri at Jeypore in the name of Saheed Laxman Nayak Pathoutsav on November 26 and December 17. This would include several competitions and cultural programmes on the main road of Jeypore
From next year, Parab will be celebrated in its own ground instead of the stadium. A 25-acre land has been identified adjacent to the SLN medical college and hospital and its foundation stone will be laid on December 21, the collector said.
