Around a thousand tribals, most of them armed with bows and arrows, gheraoed Tongpal police station in Chhattisgarh's worst insurgency-hit Sukma district today demanding the release of a naxal cadre.
The villagers, including women and children, have been agitating in front of the police station since this afternoon seeking the release of Maoist Hadma Deva, who was arrested last week, Tongpal's Station House Officer (SHO) Keshav Narayan Aditya told PTI over the phone.
Deva, carrying a reward of Rs 2,000 on his head, was wanted in several naxal incidents in the region and was apprehended on February 13 from his native place Jaimer.
"Their demands are illegal and we have asked them to withdraw their agitation," the SHO said.
Owing to the protest in front of the police station which is located on National Highway-30, the vehicular movement on Jagdalpur-Sukma road was disrupted.
