Opposition National Conference (NC) today paid floral tributes to Begam Akbar Jehan, mother of party president and former Union Minister Farooq Abdullah, on her 15th death anniversary.
The party organized a commemorative function and congregational prayers for Jehan, popularly known as "Madar-e-Meharbaan" who was the wife of NC founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah at Qaid Mazaar, Naseem Bagh here.
Former chief minister and NC working president Omar Abdullah and other senior leaders paid floral tributes to Jehan at her grave and offered 'Fateha' on the occasion, a party spokesman said.
In a message, NC president recollected the spirit of social service and social justice that was upheld by his mother and described her as an epitome of selfless social service, conviction, piety and courage.
"Madar-e-Meharbaan was not only a pillar of moral support to Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah but also a compassionate mother of the people who always demonstrated a commitment to lead them in his absence against all odds. She worked tirelessly for the amelioration of the poor and weak sections of society and took upon herself the role to be the voice of the downtrodden," Abdullah said.
He said the party would continue to be the flag-bearers of Kashmiriyat, Internal Autonomy and Article 370 despite all odds.
