A decomposed body of a Trinamool Congress activist was today found on the banks of Ajay River in the Mangalkot area of Burdwan district, police said.
District Superintendent of Police S M H Mirza said that Azad Munshi (29) had been reported missing since September 5 by his brother Anjan Munshi, and his decomposed body was today found on the banks of the Ajay river near Kalyanpur village.
The body had been sent for a post mortem, Mirza said, adding, "We have started investigation and are waiting for the post mortem report."
"I had lodged a missing report of my brother after I got to know that he had left with some TMC party workers from a house near the village on a motorcycle on September 3 and had gone missing," said Anjan Munshi.
He said he had filed another complaint with the police on September 6, where he had alleged that Apurba Chowdhury, a local Trinamool leader and close confidant of TMC Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal, and 13 others were behind the kidnapping of his brother.
"We want a proper investigation and those behind the murder of my brother be booked. I have also told the police that a contract killer was hired to kill Azad," alleged Anjan.
Officers at Mangalkot police station said there were as many as 28 cases registered against Azad Munshi including murder, extortion and loot. He was also one of the prime accused in the 2010 murder case of former CPI(M) MLA from Nanur Ananda Das.
