"Why is the state government and Mamata Banerjee not doing anything to stop this kind of violence? Goons of Trinamool under the leadership of Arabul Islam attacked our party supporters going to a rally in Alipore," senior CPI(M) leader, Surya Kanta Mishra, who is the Leader of the Opposition, said.
Mishra, who is also a CPI(M) politburo member, apprehended that in the near future, political activists and common people would face similar attacks at the hands of Trinamool Congress.
"The people of this state is keeping a watch on everything. They will give a befitting reply to Trinamool," he said.
"Earlier during her (Banerjee) days in the opposition she used to blame us for each and everything. But after becoming chief Minister every untoward incident has become a 'cooked up' case. Because of Trinamool's indulgence such activities have increased in the state," CPI-M leader Mohammed Selim said.
Left workers were attacked and several vehicles set ablaze allegedly by the Trinamool Congress at Bamunghata in South 24 Parganas district when they were going to a rally to protest Sunday's attack on Marxist leader Abdur Rezzak Mollah.
CPI(M) state secretary and Left Front Chairman Biman Bose said statewide protests would be held tomorrow.
"We will organize statewide protests. We condemn the attack. These kind of incidents remind me of the dark days of seventies. This is a dangerous trend for democracy," said Bose.
