Opposition Congress in Tripura today demanded that the state government make an assessment about the quantum of money allegedly amassed by chit fund companies by duping investors and handover the cases to the CBI for investigation.
Leader of the opposition, Sudip Roy Burman alleged that Saradha group, Rose Valley group, Waris group and other chit fund companies cheated thousands of people in the state but no effective measures were taken to arrest the people involved with the fraud.
Congress was collecting documents on the alleged cheating on the basis of which the party would submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding CBI probe into the cases, he told a press conference.
However, PWD minister Badal Chowdhury said Chief Minister Manik Sarkar wrote to a letter on January 3 to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding CBI probe against 24 chit fund groups operating in the state including Saradha, Rose Valley and Waris.
Chowdhury, the former finance minister of the state, said, "We had repeatedly informed the central government and put forward our demands that CBI should take up the cases against the chit funds and NBFCs because the state does not have enough laws to take action against NBFCs."
CBI had informed the state government that the cases were not worthy of a probe by the agency, he said adding "We would be happy if CBI takes up the cases.
