Tripura Pragatishil Gramin Congress, a breakaway faction of the opposition Congress, called a dawn-to-dusk strike in Tripura on May 12 to protest against the alleged 'mass rigging' in two Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.
Party convener Subal Bhaumick today announced the decision to call the strike and demanded repolling in the two constituencies - Tripura West and Tripura East (ST) held on April 7 and April 12 respectively.
"Lok Sabha polling in the state was reduced to a farce because there was massive false voting by the activists and cadres of CPI(M). We have already submitted our complaints to the Election Commission with evidences, but no action was taken so far," Bhaumick told reporters.
The ruling CPI(M), however, said it was a move to divert people's attention, as the party would face defeat.
Chairman of Trinamool Congress in Tripura, Ratan Chakraborty said his party was not supporting the strike call because TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee did not believe a strike could help solving the problem.
"We would neither support the strike call nor oppose it," he said.
Former Congress MLA Subal Bhaumick launched the Gramin Congress after his defeat in the Assembly elections in February last year.
