Manish Goud and his friends, all B.Tech graduates aged around 22, were coming towards Hyderabad in a four-wheeler after attending the birthday party of a friend last night.
They were allegedly inebriated at that time of the incident, police said.
After reaching near a toll plaza, Goud, who was driving the pickup vehicle, tried to pass through a barricaded route rather than from the main toll payment side at around 9.30 pm, police said.
Apparently angered at being asked for the toll fee, Goud allegedly argued with Mahesh and refused to pay, saying he is the son of a TRS leader, the police officer told PTI over phone.

Subsequently, a heated argument broke out between them following which Goud and his five friends allegedly beat up Mahesh, he said, quoting the toll supervisor's complaint.
Goud's friend Arun Reddy took out a knife and allegedly attacked Mahesh with it, resulting in injuries on his hands, he said.
Some employees of the toll plaza recorded the incident on their mobile phones and a purported footage of the same was aired by local TV channels, showing a man chasing and attacking another person (presumably Mahesh), whose shirt was torn-off, with the knife.
"Mahesh managed to call Kadthal police station and gave the description and registration number of the vehicle. A police team immediately swung into action and stopped the vehicle on the highway," another police officer, who is investigating the case, said.
All the six occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody and questioned, he said.
All of them will be produced before a court in Ranga Reddy district later today, he said.
Goud's mother is the ruling TRS corporator in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and his father is also a party leader in Hyderabad, police said.
