Members of left-wing student organisations, civil society and women outfits today called for an independent probe into the recent Chhattisgarh sterilisation tragedy.
"We demand the formation of an independent panel of community health experts to look into the cynical deaths in Chhattisgarh. We strongly condemn the foreign forces-sponsored population control mechanisms adopted by the centre," Kavita Krishnan, Secretary of All India Progressive Women's Association (AIPWA) said.
Shouting slogans against the state and BJP-led central government outside the Chhattisgarh Bhavan in the capital, the protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Raman Singh and state Health minister Amar Agrawal.
"Chief Minister Raman Singh along with the state health minister should immediately resign for their callous action. The political leaders were busy filling the quota of surgeries passed on to them by the centre," Jagmati Sangwan, General Secretary, All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) said.
"Women under 30 years of age were subjected to inhuman treatment by doctors who wanted to set records. Such incentive-based contraceptive techniques should be done away with and a minimum compensation of Rs 20 lakh should be provided to the aggrieved women," Sangwan said.
A memorandum was signed at the protest site by the organisations condemning the deaths and submitted to the resident commissioner of Chhattisgarh Bhavan here.
"We will organise a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) on December 17 in the capital regarding the issue. Women who were affected by the botched-up surgeries along with the law makers and other supporters will be present at the hearing," Jasodhara Dasgupta, Co-coordinator, National Alliance for Maternal Health and Human Rights (NAMHHR), said.
Student outfits like JNUSU, AIDWA, AISA, AIPWA among others were also present to show their solidarity to the issue.
