Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has advocated for re-opening of the historic Stillwell Road and trade through Pangsau Pass to boost the socio-economy of the north-east region through border trade.
"With this road made operational, the region can have direct road access to the east and southeast Asian region and boost socio-economy of the region through border trade," the chief minister asserted while speaking at the 62nd plenary of North East Council (NEC) at New Delhi yesterday, official sources informed here today.
Tuki also demanded that the road connecting Tashigong in Bhutan from Lumla in Tawang district be opened up for Indo-Bhutan trade.
He called for people-to-people contact between north east region and south eastern countries through cultural exchange and tourism.
Tuki also sought attention of all the constituent states of the north east region towards the detailed exercise done by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and North Eastern Council (NEC) in preparing Vision 2020 for the North East Region (NER).
While highlighting the need to revisit the Vision 2020 document, Tuki said that a detailed report of what has been done and what remains to be done under the mandate of Vision 2020 needs to be prepared immediately.
He expressed concern over the status of the 'Look East Policy', which is an integral part of the NER Vision 2020.
Expressing hope that the 'Harmuti-Naharlagun Railways Link' would be completed by December this year, he requested the Ministry of Railways to initiate the process of starting a Rajdhani Express from Itanagar to New Delhi.
He also urged the ministry to take up the proposed railway link from Tinsukia to Parsuram-Kund via Rupai and Namsai on priority.
