Turkey today pitched for an increase in the frequency of flights that connect Delhi and Mumbai to Istanbul and also for the inclusion of more Indian cities in the airline network saying it would prove to be a "game-changer".
Turkish envoy Burak Akcapar made the remarks during the launch of visa application centres, located across 16 cities in India and one each at Nepal and Maldives for which it entered into an agreement with visa provider VFS Global.
"We have been seeking to double the current frequencies from Istanbul to Delhi and Mumbai. That's no longer enough to handle the traffic. I think the next big thing should be to cover as many destinations as possible.
"Connecting Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru to Istanbul would be a game-changer in terms of visitors and business opportunities. We are ready to boost air capacity immediately and hoping that the Centre would give us the permission to increase these numbers," he said.
Currently, Turkish Airlines operates one flight each from Delhi and Mumbai daily. Turkey's national carrier flies to 105 countries and connects around 230 cities in different parts of the world.
Akcapar said that under the new arrangement, VFS visa application centres will be the main channel for submitting applications for Turkish visas from India, Nepal and Maldives and said the facility would provide applicants a better and easier service.
